The year that was: Our most read projects of 2024
As another design-packed year comes to a close, we celebrate the most read projects over the last 12 months.
Welcome to Mix Interiors issue 222! Inside we explore the notion of home as it relates to commercial interiors, asking in our latest Mix Roundtable: is the ‘homeification’ of the office a positive or a problem? Elsewhere, we speak to ID:SR’s Helen Berresford to discuss designing for people and the practice’s mammoth projects for the BBC and BT, and sit down with Zoe and Layo Paskin - responsible for some of this country’s most celebrated hospitality destinations. For project inspiration, we look inside BBC Studios’ new Bristol HQ from HOK, Clockwise’s latest coworking outpost from Hawkins\Brown, an eco-prototype hotel by Gran Melia and the Mayfair stay that everyone’s talking about, The Twenty Two. In our regular Positive Impact feature, we talk sustainability with Foster + Partners, charting the practice’s role in leading the industry; touch upon the dark side of the metaverse; and look back at London Design Festival, curating the highlights from a bumper year. A big thank you to Ekho Studio and Karndean for this issue’s psychedelic cover artwork - inspired by the post-pandemic creative reset and reflecting the trend ‘random chaos’ using abstract shapes, disjoined patterns and clashing colours.
“We were thrilled to be involved in this edition’s cover with Karndean, which is a bold and different feel to some of the more muted colour trends to date. Influenced by the 70’s aesthetic and the fluidity of liquid lava lamps to create a fun, colourful and ‘groovy’ design to inspire use of colour.”
Inspired by the post-pandemic ‘creative reset’, Karndean Designflooring have reflected the trend ‘random chaos’ through the use of abstract shapes, disjoined patterns and clashing colours. Intended to instil a sense of happiness and optimism, the random and abstract nature of the front cover further reflects that flooring designs has no bounds, promoting individuality and endless possibilities.

In the rush to create spaces people want to be in, are we still creating spaces fit to work in?
Speaking to Bristol's emerging status as a creative hub, HOK has revealed BBC Studios' largest workplace outside of London.
This issue we explore new trends and themes in commercial interior design, speak to titans of industry and discover inspiring projects across workplace and hospitality.
Despite last year’s cautious return, 2022 felt like a homecoming for London Design Festival, with an optimistic buzz around the week-long event - and an obvious international presence that has been missed.
