Taking inspiration from the seminal design of the Barbican Centre, Spacemade’s most recent project set out to be a flexible, contemporary destination for London creatives. Meaning ‘concrete’ in French, Beton is spread across nine floors and its industrial aesthetic pays homage to architecture of the 50s and 60s. Aiming to curate a hub where disruptive ideas and concepts can flourish, the space is also influenced by the creative culture of Clerkenwell, renowned for having the highest concentration of designers and architects per square mile in the world. The result is a dynamic workspace that recognises the importance of in-person collaboration in our increasingly remote, digital age.
Beton offers users a broad choice of coworking areas, private offices, meeting rooms and isolated phone booths, as well as media spaces – including a fully fitted podcasting studio, available to rent. Workspaces are available under both private office and coworking memberships, with a wealth of convenient amenities including 24/7 access, fully stocked kitchens, 1GB fibre line and fast WiFi, bike storage, and an on-site community team; pet owners will be glad to know that dogs are welcome, too. Opening its doors in June 2024, a host of members’ events are set to be held at Beton, ranging from breakfast clubs and wellness workshops to power hours in partnership with local businesses.
In the four meeting rooms, which can accommodate between four and ten people, users will find built-in video conferencing technology and fast internet access, while Amplify – the inhouse podcast studio – offers a space to kickstart a new audio endeavour, and is fully equipped with a camera, tripod, and microphones. Throughout the shared lounges, seating areas and coworking spaces, meticulously hand-picked furniture is joined by a colourful, curated selection of printed artwork, including hand painted murals by Sarah Sebastian.
“We believe that creatives thrive when surrounded by like-minded individuals and Beton has been crafted to foster just that,” says Jonny Rosenblatt, Co-founder of Spacemade. “Designed to meet the unique needs of small and medium sized enterprises as well as freelancers, the goal is to use the creative hub of Barbican and Clerkenwell to foster the collaborative nature between the industries, integral in making the area the cultural powerhouse it is today.”
