No1 Old Trafford by Jon Matthews Architects
Mixology North21 Project of the Year Finalist: Living Interiors
The design for the reception and amenity hall at No1 Old Trafford is deliberately restrained and cool through its aesthetic. The joy of the space is delivered through a simple palette of concrete, oiled mdf and steel.
The key challenge was to work with the vastness of the space and create human scale amenity and home working spaces, whilst celebrating a hall-like volume synonymous with an industrial architecture that once populated the docks.
The legibility of the space is organised around a sculptural centre piece that carefully cantilevers within the room and identifies with the historical vernacular of the docks.
Whilst simple and limited, the careful and clever use of material delivers and simple yet elegant arrival sequence where the daily function of the space as a place to pass through, work, play or even party can successfully coexist alongside one another.
