Martin Hulbert Design (MHD) undertook the renovation and refurbishment of No1 York, an existing 39-bedroom hotel. Part of the renovation involved opening up various rooms to create views and glimpses from one space to another, enticing guests through each space.
New features were added, including a spa inside the vaulted basement and a restaurant. Still, many aspects of the original house have been preserved, such as the staircase with a roof top lantern and the fireplaces.
MHD engaged with local suppliers, makers and artists to create an atmospheric, unexpected whimsical design that doesn’t take itself too seriously. Suspended in the bar is a working model train, while black lacquered violins and cellos mount the walls within the stairwell. Contemporary artwork is inspired by the cathedral. According to the studio, inspiration for the interiors came from “toasted buns, Yorkshire tea, woolly socks by the fire, tweed, ghost walks and rhubarb.”
