Bristol Beacon is located in the city’s historic Harbourside district. The site first became a grand assembly hall in 1867-1873, then during the early 2000s, it was decided that the building’s 1951 main hall had fallen into such disrepair, and so far behind its competitors, that a major project was required to reinstate Bristol’s concert hall as an accessible and sustainable venue to attract world-class performers. Bristol City Council and Bristol Music Trust set a brief to design a distinctive, world class concert hall and musical education hub, and Levitt Bernstein transformed the Grade II listed building into a unique venue, capable of hosting a diverse musical programme and attracting world-class performers.

A new main hall seats audiences up to 2,200, the original Victorian walls also housing a restored second hall. Disused cellars have been thoughtfully converted into a third venue, as well as a recording studio and practice rooms. As part of the essential upgrades to Bristol Beacon’s historic building, Levitt Bernstein addressed a clear need for environmentally conscious design. Reducing energy consumption and carbon emissions was paramount, whilst also adapting the building to a lifetime of sustainable use. Sustainability that embraces social, economic, and environmental issues lay at the core of the proposals. The project is set to achieve BREEAM ‘Very Good’ rating, which is a challenging target for Grade II Listed buildings on a constrained urban site.
