The Wave is a 16,600sqm building for the University of Sheffield’s Faculty of Social Sciences, designed to meet future growth to 2035 and provide a world class, highly sustainable environment that encourages inter-departmental collaboration and enhances the faculty’s reputation for excellence through a range of formal and informal active learning environments.
The form of the building reflects the interdisciplinary nature of Social Sciences with a ring of learning and teaching spaces arranged around a central glazed atrium. This is a public space with a cafu00e9 that links the two entrances and creates social and events space for the university, local residents and the adjacent cancer hospital. Adjacent to the two entrances are pocket parks, landscaped areas enhancing site biodiversity and providing external social space for the building users and visitors to the hospital. Through this public use of the building as a community asset it has created real social value.
