The OWO Raffles Hotel, a landmark of architectural significance, opened its doors to the public in September 2023, marking the debut of the UK’s first Raffles Hotel. Situated on the historic royal site of Whitehall Palace, the Grade II* listed Old War Office has undergone a remarkable six-year transformation, culminating in its rebirth as The OWO. With its storied wartime past and the iconic status it holds within London’s architectural landscape, Goddard Littlefair was tasked to design the Guerlain Spa and Pillar Wellbeing spaces.

Spanning five floors and occupying four levels, three of which are subterranean, the brief was to craft an immersive sanctuary that paid homage to the building’s rich history, while offering a luxurious and rejuvenating experience for guests. The design journey had to also incorporate the eastern influences synonymous with the prestigious Raffles brand. Materiality was therefore classic in its selection with a neutral palette of real stones and a warm selection of timbers and metals, lending spaces an elegant and timeless appeal. The form of the design, from the triple height arches in the swimming pool to the recreated period detail of the barber and juice bar, successfully gives the impression they have always been there.
