Just as an oyster hides its pearl, Clam can open and close to ‘hide’ its’ inner light. The light which comes in 2 sizes, throws a carefully considered glow which can be controlled by the opening and closing of the pendant, as a built in feature to control light and resulting ambience, within a space. The Clam was launched in 2021, with a design that is technically complex but which is designed to look simple and elegant, in-keeping with the design DNA of Fritz Hansen and sitting perfectly with a wider collection of decorative lights.
For the design to work properly, two large mouth blown shades must match symmetrically and also in terms of weight. The concept was a true challenge for even the most experienced craftsmen. An internal diffuser creates beautiful, glare-free light for ambiance and atmosphere. A small, brass knob can be turned by hand to open and close the lower shade, adjusting light, mood, and styling. The knob design is inspired by antique gas lamps.
