Fathom’s 6 Babmaes Street is a new ‘deskless office’ concept for The Crown Estate’s customers in St James’s, London. An imaginative re-use of an existing 1970s building, the space provides a relaxed environment for events, collaboration, networking and wellbeing activities. Celebrating the existing raw concrete shell and combining it with finely crafted interiors has created an urban sanctuary with formal and informal areas defined with bold patterned rugs, vintage and contemporary furniture and a mixture of floor, table, track and feature pendant lights. Fathom counterbalanced textured retro materials such as hessian, fluted glass and macramé, reflecting the coarse exposed concrete beams, with crafted finishes such as curved timber joinery, polished terrazzo and brushed metalwork. Bespoke paintings, murals and rugs draw on 1970s geometric artworks afford the spaces a distinct character, while a mixture of upcycled vintage and contemporary furniture and finishes share a modern retro palette.
As part of a wider strategy to rejuvenate existing stock for The Crown Estate, Fathom were tasked with recycling the existing vacant 1970s building on Babmaes Street to extend its lifespan for a further 10 years. The building use enables ‘compact communities’ which provide shared facilities in a prime central London location to support local businesses and their employees.
