The Heart and Lung Research Institute (HLRI) is a development led by the University of Cambridge involving the Royal Papworth Hospital. Located on the Cambridge Bioscience Campus, the 8,000 m2 building was designed by the Fairhursts Design Group (FDG) to accommodate the highest concentration of world-class clinicians, research teams, academia, scientists and industry experts in Europe, to treat patients for chronic cardiovascular and respiratory diseases.
The organic form of the HLRI, with its gently curving facades and soft corners creates mystery around the scale of the building as well as being a striking addition to the Campus. Internally the structure uses natural light and a nature-inspired scheme to ensure a calming environment for all, while the flower meadow colour palette reflects the diversity of the working being undertaken and connects users to the outside.
