Situated a stone’s throw from Trafalgar Square, and moments away from the iconic Whitehall, The Horse & Guardsman is arguably in one of the best locations in London. The building was designed by Richard Coad and built 1870-73. To this day, its structure mirrors that of a Victorian build with high ceilings, arched windows and a unique use of materials, styles, and workmanship.
Decorating in rich, warm colours such as brown and dark red has helped create a homely atmosphere in which patrons can sit, chat, and relax for hours. Soft lighting above the bar and in the deepest corners of the building along with wall lighting and lamps were an effective way to create a more soothing, warming atmosphere. The most notable and eye-catching accessory has to be the huge, gilt framed painting depicting the royal cavalry charging forward in a “death or glory” scene. This beautifully designed, classic English pub with historical relevance will be a mainstay of Whitehall for many years to come.
