Schools are at the heart of any healthy community, and recognising this, North Lanarkshire Council committed to an ambitious investment programme for its schools. Newmains and St Brigid’s Community Hub, designed by BDP, is one of the key projects in the programme. The project brings together Newmains Primary School, St. Brigid’s Primary School, and a family learning centre for pre school children as well as a range of community focussed facilities into a unified, sustainable and welcoming campus in the heart of the neighbourhood of Newmains.

This is a building designed for the community, by the community. The vision for the campus was informed and developed through extensive consultation with the stakeholders. The design of internal spaces responds to the feedback received from pupils, staff, parents and the wider community. With sustainability a major part of the client brief, the use of photovoltaic panels to harness solar energy reduces the amount of energy consumed, while LED Lighting and lighting controls are used to reduce overall electrical energy consumption. The use of efficient fixtures and sensor activated taps also reduces overall water consumption, while Sustainable Urban Drainage systems such as wales and rain gardens are included in the soft landscape solutions.
