University of Maryland and University of Colorado use nanotechnology to create new material
In the creation of the material, researchers used nanotechnology to remove lignin – the part of the wood that makes the material brown and strong.
In doing so, researchers created a very pale wood made of cellulose nanofibres. To give the material back its strength and rigidity, it is then compressed and a super hydrophobic compound is added. The result is a bright white building material that could be used for roofs to direct heat away from inside the building.
