HI-MACS® brings colour, sustainability and hygiene to design

HI-MACS® is a solid surface material which is hard-wearing, resilient, visually seamless and can be moulded into any shape. This non-porous hygienic, easy-care material is also stain and chemical resistant, and so is widely used for architectural and interior design projects.

HI-MACS® has launched a number of new colours and ranges, including two contemporary terrazzo colours, Terrazzo Classico and the more industrial Terrazzo Grigio, created for high traffic areas such as hospitality, retail and commercial workplaces as well as surfaces such as tabletops and bathroom basins.

The design world today demands healthy, environmentally friendly materials and products – and it’s with this in mind that HI-MACS® is moving forward with its range of natural colours that are high impact aesthetically, yet low impact in environmental cost – thanks to a new sustainable range of recycled colours.

Hi-MACS® have also recently introduced three new colours for both their Granite and Volcanics range, all of which have been certified by the Scientific Certification Systems (SCS) for stated recycled content.

Durable, colourfast, and easy to maintain, the stone-effect Granite designs are perfect for all surface finishes, in everything from kitchens, bathrooms and wet rooms to retail and commercial interiors, while the Volcanics palette is more akin to a precious natural stone, bringing a luxurious look to any scheme. The new recycled colour collection can help specifiers, architects and builders obtain Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED®) accreditation for sustainable design, and all recycled HI-MACS® colours have the Greenguard Gold Indoor Air Quality Certificate.

The 1841 coffee and espresso bar in Glasgow uses HI-MACS® for some Italian flair.

In 1841 the Thomson Coffee Roaster company was formed, and nearly 200 years later this great coffee and espresso bar has opened – showcasing their coffee and acting as a retail shop for Thomson coffee.

The space is calming and welcoming, whilst also maintaining a high attention to detail and with a clear design aesthetic. As with any public space, hygiene, cleanliness, and ease of use is paramount, so the owners, Grant Dick and Russell Jenkins, decided that HI-MACS® was the perfect material for the countertop. It is hardwearing and resilient against almost all every-day stains such as fruit juice, coffee and red wine. HI-MACS® is totally non-porous and impervious and it is extremely scratch resistant, usually needing just a gentle scrub with a mild abrasive. HI-MACS® is also heat-resistant, due to the innovative Thermalcure technology used in its manufacture.

The design of the coffee shop mixes the solid surface’s minimalism with period features within the space to represent the past and present, which ties in with Thomson’s as one of Glasgow’s oldest roasters, whilst staying at the forefront of the industry for so many years.
