Camira launches Oceanic, created from recycled marine plastic

Camira have launched Oceanic in collaboration with SEAQUAL, designed to combat marine plastic pollution and work towards a waste free environment. 

Created entirely from post-consumer recycled plastic, Oceanic has been created in collaboration with SEAQUAL, using the initiatives yarn created from plastic debris sourced from the sea, as well as bottles from landfill. ‘Oceanic is our very first fabric to contain recycled plastic marine waste. Building on Camira’s stance around designing for a better tomorrow, we are thrilled to be working in partnership with the SEAQUAL initiative to combat marine plastic pollution,’ Lynn Kingdon, Camira’s Head of Contract Design told Mix.

With a colour selection of 16 shades, Oceanic provides a versatile palette that reflects the natural inspiration behind the collection, as well as including a number of trend-led colours. The diagonal weave of Oceanic is designed for upholstery onto both task and lounge seating within commercial spaces.

‘Taking its strength from the raw material from which it was originally created, Oceanic is a highly durable textile; blending a soft fluidity with an enhanced level of performance which makes it ideal for inclusion in a wide range of modern interiors,’ said Lynn.

‘Sustainability is part of Camira’s DNA. We’ve been producing sustainable fabrics for many years and we are excited to elevate this with the launch of Oceanic. Made entirely from post-consumer recycled plastic – from debris floating discarded in our seas, used to make SEAQUAL yarn, to bottles thrown away and destined for landfill. Oceanic is one small drop in the mission to clean both the earth and its ocean – a contemporary fabric that is a recycled polyester with a purpose.’

‘Originally inspired by the shocking fact that every year, 12 million tonnes of plastic ends up in our oceans, we’re proud to say that for every 2 kgs (4 metres) of Oceanic fabric sold, 1kg of waste is removed from the ocean. Saving our ocean one bottle at a time, each metre of Oceanic is woven from yarn made from 26 plastic bottles. Cleverly dyed using cationic yarn, this multi-tonal textile combines a paler warp with a deeply saturated weft. The use of an intricate twill weave, creates the diagonal pattern – producing a design with considered colour and distinctive construction to create a contemporary sustain-able fabric.’

So, what else have Camira got planned for 2020?

‘As we enter a new decade, we are excited to launch our very first fabric to contain recycled marine waste, as well as a new panel fabric made entirely from cork. Natural, renewable and recyclable, it is biodegradable and 100% environmentally friendly. With an inexhaustive list of resources yet to explore, the future of fabric has never looked so exciting!’
